Wenchuan Earthquake

On May 12, 2008, an earthquake measured 8.0 on the Richter scale hit Wenchuan, Sichuan Province in China, the tremors were felt in many provinces and municipalities across the country, and millions pf people were afflicted in this earthquake. UnionPay immediately donated fund to disaster areas through the Chinese Red Cross Foundation. At present, the donation has increased to RMB 7.19 million; In addition, UnionPay opened many express donation channels for charity institutions at all levels such as swiping card and online payment.

2008 Southern Snow Disaster

At the beginning of 2008 southern China was hit by a snow storm, and great efforts were made by UnionPay to alleviate the losses and pains with donation of RMB 1 million to the disaster-hit areas through Chinese Red Cross Foundation.

Indian Ocean Tsunami

At the beginning of 2005, a tsunami hit Southeast Asia and made thousands of people homeless, UnionPay raised RMB 245,000 donations from its staff.

Fighting Against SARS

In the fight against SARS in 2003, the newly-built UnionPay donated RMB 2 million through Chinese Red Cross Foundation and then donated RMB 900, 000 to the Anti-SARS Special Aids. In the same year, UnionPay was awarded Charity Medal of Chinese Red Cross Foundation.

Tuition Assitance Forum

UnionPay Tuition Assistance Forum is one of the series public activities called "UnionPay Encouragement”, targeting at the young people with its focus on colleague students to spread and enrich UnionPay brand concept - “Grow Together”. With many experts from all walks of life, invited by UnionPay as well as many domestic colleges and universities, this forum continuously launches many speeches about bankcard industry, hot issues concerning economy and finance to boost understanding and concern for the card industry among all walks of life, especially among young students.

Tuition Assistance Fund

In June 2007, UnionPay established the “UnionPay Tuition Assistance Fund” together with China Charity Federation, aiming at providing financial aids for the outstanding students with poverty-stricken families who are admitted to colleges and universities. UnionPay will accumulatively provide RMB 6 million Yuan of financial aids for impoverished students in three years from 2007 to 2009. more>>

Hope School

In 2005, UnionPay donated RMB 500,000 to establish a Hope primary school for the local children in Longkou of Xingguo County, Jiangxi Province; in 2008, UnionPay cooperated with member banks of Hunan Province to donate RMB 400,000, and built two Hope primary schools in the poverty-stricken areas in Hunan.

Together with other industries, UnionPay continuously explores effective ways of co-development for the bankcard industry and environmental protection causes and jointly advocates the new concept of green card for healthy life. more>>

China Red Credit Card

On July 25, 2008, UnionPay issued UnionPay standard “China Red” charity credit card jointly with many commercial banks. The card stands for an innovative mode of charity utility with sustainable development. UnionPay and the issuers will make donations to “China Red” activity of Chinese Red Cross Foundation only if the cardholders could actively apply for and use the cards.

Services for Peasant Workers

At the end of 2005, UnionPay took an active response and participated in the launch of Bankcard Featuring Service for Peasant Workers that was initiated by the PBC aiming at solving peasant workers’ problems of carrying cash back home. By fully extending its advantages in cross-bank network,, UnionPay combined and connected over 60,000 Rural Credit Cooperatives that were spreading nationwide directly under the central government to provide a secure financial remittance service for the migratory workers. Millions of peasant workers have realized their wishes of “depositing at working place and withdrawing at home” through the service. The service provided much convenience and safety for peasant workers’ carrying cash back home, and played an important role for driving the rural financial development, supporting the construction of new socialist countryside and addressing “Three Agricultural Issues”. more>>

Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD and AIDS

In 2004, as a response to the “121 Unified Operation Plan” calling for fighting against AIDS made by 22 academicians of CAS, UnionPay donated RMB200,000 to Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD and AIDS to support the AIDS prevention in China and help those orphans living in poor conditions and losing their parents because of AIDS. In June of the same year, UnionPay was awarded Humanity Caring Award by Wang Longde, Vice Minister of Ministry of Public Health.
